چکیده

Abstract The number of adjustable parameters in a model or hypothesis is often taken as the formal expression its simplicity. I take issue with this `definition´ and argue that comparative simplicity has quasi-empirical measure, reflecting experts’ judgements who track past use model-type across domains. Since models are represented by restricted sets functions suitable space, formally speaking, general `measure simplicity´ may be defined implicitly for elements function space. This paper sketches such framework starting from intuitive constraints. It shown how feed into usual definition can recovered. A theorem H. Akaike theory model-choice recently been used to shine new light on relationship between demand empirical success, even `truth´. approach favored here permits an alternative answer based reliabilist account justification: if successful evidential inductive.

Simplicity and Goodness-of-Fit in Explanation: The Case of Intuitive Curve-Fitting

Other things being equal, people prefer simpler explanations to more complex ones. However, complex explanations often provide better fits to the observed data, and goodness-of-fit must therefore be traded off against simplicity to arrive at the most likely explanation. In three experiments, we examine how people negotiate this tradeoff. As a case study, we investigate laypeople’s intuitions ab...

Signal detection Using Rational Function Curve Fitting

In this manuscript, we proposed a new scheme in communication signal detection which is respect to the curve shape of received signal and based on the extraction of curve fitting (CF) features. This feature extraction technique is proposed for signal data classification in receiver. The proposed scheme is based on curve fitting and approximation of rational fraction coefficients. For each symbo...

Curve Fitting and Polymers

1 Curve Fitting and Polymers The availability of data from well-characterized samples such as those offered by Beamson and Briggs [1] owe much to the popularity of XPS as a tool for understanding the chemistry of polymers. A typical C 1s envelope [2] (Figure 1) includes structure that offers chemical information about a sample, but without some initial starting point it is difficult to construc...

Efficient Curve Fitting

We propose a method for fitting a piecewise parametric curve to a sequence of digitized points such as those acquired from a computer mouse or digitizing pen. The fitting is done on-the-fly rather than after a complete sequence of points has been acquired, thereby providing high quality parameterized curves for immediate display during drawing. The method is fast, accurate, and robust, handles ...
